Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Councilmember José Huizar, LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia, John Paul DeJoria and other distinguished guests to attend Boyle Heights Ceremony

LOS ANGELES, October 26, 2011 — Variety Boys and Girls Club and Variety the Children’s Charity of Southern California will celebrate the grand opening of the charity’s new $10.1 million dollar, 28,500-square-foot Boyle Heights’ facility with a ribbon cutting Thursday, November 3.

Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Councilmember Jose Huizar, LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia, John Paul DeJoria and other distinguished guests will also be on hand for the historic event.

The ribbon cutting will celebrate the grand opening of the new and vastly improved Variety Boys & Girls Club building, which will allow the Club to serve more children in the community, as well as include space for other community organizations to host programs and events. The modern building replaces the previous facility at 2530 Cincinnati St. in Boyle Heights.

The Club underwent a “Changing Children’s Lives” Capital Campaign to fund the new facility. With the help of Variety of Southern CA, Tent 25’s $5 million dollar commitment, the Club will continue its 60 year tradition of providing at-risk youth of Boyle Heights and surrounding communities with outstanding academic, recreational, and social activities.

Alan Davy, President of Variety the Children’s Charity of Southern California said, “For sixty years the Boys and Girls Club of Boyle Heights has been a prime focus of Variety the Children’s Charity of Southern California. This new club is the touchstone to our past and the cornerstone to the future for thousands of at risk children in East Los Angeles.”

“As someone who grew up playing in the Variety Boys and Girls Club in Boyle Heights, I can personally attest to the strength of the program in helping young people live better, more productive lives,” said Council member José Huizar. “I am ecstatic that a new generation is going to enjoy all the benefits that Variety Boys and Girls Club offers in a modern, state-of-the art facility.”
